►►► MT. TALINIS 2016: 1ST MAJOR CLIMB | AYAW MO NA OR 1 MORE MAJOR CLIMB PA? ◄◄◄

EXCITING FIRST MAJOR CLIMB, ISN'T IT?

There's always a first time for everything and this one was exciting. It was November 26-27, 2016 that we made it. Almost half of the group were first timer in this climb. For me "crazy" was always a compliment and I am fortunate to have a large group of crazy friends, all of whom ooze charisma and carry their own story-lines which will actually lighten up your load when you're already in the trail. They were wild, free-spirited, unpredictable, but in a non-destructive way. Happy to have these people around.

VIA DAUIN-APOLONG, VALENCIA TRAIL:

ELITE MOUNTAINEERING SOCIETY & KALIT2X MOUNTAINEERS

From left: Archie, Richard, Damian, Girlie, Jed, Zhet, Arnie, Bigbro Andrew, Nyor William, Carlo, Ryan, Ace, Mafe, Edward, Edward's Friend, Wesley and Manong Nestor our funny guide.

Mt. Talinis, also known as the Cuernos de Negros (Horns of Negros), with 1,903 metres  above sea level and the 2nd highest mountain on Negros Island after Mt. Kanlaon. It's a complex volcano in the Philippine province of Negros Oriental.

ASKING FOR GUIDANCE/PROTECTION:

Iglecia de Santa Catalina de Alejandria Church
Arrived at 4am, we were straight to the public market where a famous "puto sikwati"can be found and of course a heavy meal to fuel our first day. We also bought food supplies etc. for 2 days.  After digging our breakfast, this was our first stop upon arriving Dumaguete City.

A short prayer lead by Bigbro asking for a blessing, guidance and protection for our ascend.

THE WAITING GAME:

Greeted and welcomed by Wilson of Negros, one of the BangBros, we were pretty much excited to hit the road given by a good Saturday morning before meeting up with our ride.

While waiting for our ride heading to jump off.
You're about to set foot in the middle of the woods but it doesn't mean you don't have to fix up yourself. HAHA, it's a contentment after knowing that you're sweating and tired at least you feel pretty enough, Charooooot . .

Current road to the jump off are pretty much finished and paved unlike this last 2016. Our hired jeepney ended up stopping here and we walked around a 100-200 meters I guess away to the area. So we're all warmed up. Nyor Richard handle it (empe) with care ha. Lol :)

REGISTRATION:

Oh com'on these faces! Lol, So we're done with the registration and guide/porter negotiation. Then after a short minute briefing and settling of loads we already started the trek.

START TREK:

The weather was just fine for us to start the trek so derecho2x na!
Our first regroup after we were greeted an open trail and assault. But not a bad start.

These guys look so cool here but you don't know that some of them were pampering their hangover since they're having a session before boat departure.

The view at the first regroup upon entering the rain forest.

Our not so loud music on the trail saved asses of these two foreigners (Wesley and Damian). We found out that they didn't hired any guide and don't even know the trail yet. I don't know why. If they don't want to pay for guide fee or they just don't trust the local guides? Maybe. .

Damian - (scuba diver) who was invited by Wesley - (a mountaineer) for this trip only wore sleeves, short jeans and he has scratches all over his body. It might be from the unfortunate trail they took. They were literally lost after they hear our music, they found us then joined the group.

We also shared our trail food to Damian coz it's pretty obvious that he's not well briefed by his companion Wesley that they will be hiking a not so ordinary mountain. Lol . . Kain lng bro!

They're pretty mesmerized by this tree that makes everyone rest here and took some photos of it. Murag naka relate ni sila jud. Halfway to Yagumyom Lake.

Yagumyum Lake:

We reached the first lake, Yagumyum Lake around 11-12 noon where we took our lunch and nap before proceeding the the campsite @Nailig Lake.  No cooking that time since we already packed lunch that we bought at Dumaguete City. Some brought adobo from Cebu itself to avoid another expenses.

And a quick group photo before leaving Yagumyum lake which made this space a crowded one. Gabi brothers were using trash bag as their waterproof in case. Well, that's very creative of you yet cool. .

Continue Trek:

Finally we're almost at the campsite so just a little push nalng poh. . Enjoying the trail was the most memorable trek if you had one. I know everybody will get there where you're heading to and everybody does. We took pictures if needed and rest if it was too.

Nailig Lake: Campsite

Atlast, we reached Lake Nailig around 3-4pm and the water level was good. After a short rest upon the arrival, everybody's busy pitching their tents.

Not waiting for dark to invade, we took our food supply for dinner and cooked. There were other groups who arrived but we got the best spot at the campsite

Emepredor Light fueled the first night socials at Nailig Lake campsite. The session doesn't took long since we left the campsite for summit at early 6:ooam.

The Summit:

Our 1st major climbed that was so blessed with a perfect clearing.

This captivating moment when you're at the summit of Cuernos de Negros. You can also climb the tree with care to satisfy your hunger.

Breakcamp:

A quick glimpsed on how these masculine men savored and enjoyed the moment before leaving the camp site. They were pretty confidently handsome with six pack I guess. . Lol!

Everyone were ready leaving the site at 9am Sunday morning. So we're leaving na.

Descend:

We also shared our trail food to Damian coz it's pretty obvious that he's not well briefed by his companion Wesley that they will be hiking a not so ordinary mountain. Lol . . Kain lng bro! Nad oh I forgot, we also shared dinner to him since he's out of supply for food. You're welcome Damian :)

Kaipohan Sulfur Vent:

Knowing that this geothermal steam vent can cause you to unconsciousness due to excessive inhalation of sulfur, we made a deal with our guide to stopped by quickly. We took some photos and videos with care.

A plunge in this so cold river just along the trail after a muddy descend as a pre-refreshment. We need not to be long to avoid chilblains because it's really cold and the fog was just overhead. Water was leeches free too. So no worries unlike other mountain trails in the Philippines.

Ranger Camp:

We took our lunch here after passing the sulfur river and the quick plunge. Usually mountaineers will take their long rest here before heading to the jump off for a ride.

Dumaguete City Gala:

It was Sunday night that we enjoyed this karaoke leaded by Bigbro at "Lamias Tapok-anan Resto Bar" after strolling at the boulevard tasting all the street foods there. Our exhausted feet ended up here as our last place to bond with.

Sleepover @Wilson's Place:

(Dumaguete City)

Rise and shine back packers!
At Wilson's house where we slept Sunday night instead of checking in to nearby hostels. It's a savings though. We all have sleeping bags that we could use so why not. Lol :)

Bye for now Querneos de Negros . .

See you soon !

A smile of achievement . . !
Our best ride at Monday morning going to the port. At last we're heading home (Cebu).
